An electric streetcar toppled on a narrow Lisbon street, killing at least 15 people and injuring 18 others. Portuguese television showed the yellow-and-white tram lying on its side with its roof and sides partially crumpled. Several dozen emergency workers rushed to the scene. The derailment happened around 6 pm, at the start of the evening rush hour. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the accident.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa offered condolences to the families and all affected by the tragedy.
