SK Hynix and Samsung surged as OpenAI tapped them to supply high-bandwidth memory for its $500bn Stargate project.
SK Hynix shares jumped roughly 10%, while Samsung Electronics climbed over 3% in Seoul trading.
The two firms together control more than half of global memory production, shaping pricing, capacity, and technological direction.

Samsung dominates DRAM and NAND flash markets, powering data centers, computers, and smartphones worldwide.
SK Hynix ranks second in DRAM and leads in high-bandwidth memory, critical for Nvidia’s AI processors.
The Stargate project promises unprecedented capital spending across the AI supply chain, boosting both firms’ market influence.

High-Bandwidth Memory Drives Global AI Expansion

HBM enables AI chips to transfer enormous data volumes at ultra-fast speeds, supporting large-scale model training.
Stargate will deploy supercomputers across continents, demanding hundreds of thousands of HBM wafers or stacks monthly.
The project reinforces SK Hynix’s HBM3 dominance and supports Samsung’s expansion into next-generation HBM4 production.

Industry analysts predict these volumes will reshape global semiconductor capacity and strengthen South Korea’s memory sector leadership.
Both firms will benefit from long-term demand as AI computing requirements continue to escalate.
The initiative sets a benchmark for HBM adoption across global AI infrastructure projects.

Seoul Emerges as Strategic AI Partner

OpenAI’s Stargate strengthens South Korea’s goal to become a regional AI technology hub beyond hardware.
The project deepens U.S.-Korea cooperation while reducing dependence on China-sensitive AI supply chains.
Korea’s export-driven memory industry provides the scale and political reliability needed for critical AI infrastructure.

Hosting the project positions South Korea as a central player in shaping next-generation AI and semiconductor development.
The initiative highlights Asia’s growing role in global AI deployment and strategic technology planning.
Seoul’s involvement signals the region’s increasing importance in securing resilient and politically aligned AI supply chains.
