Authorities Intercept Suspects During Covert Sting
Law enforcement officials in Georgia have arrested three Chinese nationals accused of trying to buy uranium on the black market. The State Security Service reported that the men were detained in Tbilisi after attempting to finalize the purchase of roughly two kilograms of radioactive material valued at about $400,000. The uranium was confiscated and secured by radiation experts following the operation.
Plan Involved Smuggling Route to China
Investigators allege the group planned to transport the uranium from Georgia to China, passing through Russia as part of the route. One of the suspects was reportedly staying in Georgia without valid documentation, while others are believed to have managed logistics and funding remotely. Searches of properties connected to the men in Tbilisi and Batumi uncovered materials that prosecutors say link them directly to the attempted deal.
Legal Action and Global Security Concerns
The three individuals are facing criminal charges under Georgian laws regulating the possession and trade of nuclear materials, which carry penalties of up to a decade in prison. Officials said the case illustrates ongoing challenges in combating the trafficking of radioactive substances, an issue that continues to draw attention from international security and nonproliferation agencies.
