Japan launches a new initiative to redirect visitors from overcrowded cities like Tokyo and Kyoto to quieter regions. The Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) now offer free domestic flights to UK and European travellers across Japan’s regional network. The programme runs from 24 November to 31 January 2026 and aims to ease pressure on major tourist hubs while promoting lesser-known destinations.

    Free Flights for Multi-Stop Adventures

The “Stopover & Add-on Free Fare” scheme allows eligible economy passengers to book up to two free domestic flights on international bookings made by 31 January. Passengers can schedule these flights anytime after 31 January, letting them travel from Tokyo to Hiroshima, Aomori, or the Izu Peninsula for the same fare. ANA says the scheme supports multi-stop itineraries without extra cost. Taxes and fees still apply, and the offer depends on availability. Travellers can book through travel agents, ANA offices outside Japan, or directly via ANA.

Expanding Regional Tourism and Local Economies

Japan faces overtourism, with a record 36.9 million visitors in 2024. Surveys show over 90 per cent want to explore regional areas, but fewer than 10 per cent do. The initiative aims to balance tourism and promote less-visited regions. By opening more than 40 ANA hubs, the campaign makes multi-stop itineraries easier and more affordable while supporting regional economic growth. ANA expects the programme to relieve pressure on crowded destinations and offer visitors authentic experiences in quieter, culturally rich areas.
