The White House unveiled a “Hall of Shame” as Trump intensified his attacks on what he calls fake news. Officials said the sortable, regularly updated portal prevents any alleged hoax, anonymous claim, or partisan smear from disappearing. Critics view the launch as a major blow to press freedom in the United States.
Major News Outlets Face Public Scrutiny
The portal labeled The Washington Post “Offender of the week” and targeted The New York Times, CNN, CBS News, and The Independent. It listed specific claims against each outlet, grouped into categories such as circular reporting, false claims, misrepresentation, and left-wing lunacy. The White House also criticized the Associated Press and Reuters for bias and omissions, while noting the portal excluded conservative-leaning publications. Matt Murray, executive editor of the Post, condemned the targeting as intentional and vowed continued accurate reporting.
Experts Warn of Press Freedom Threats
The Media Research Centre welcomed the website, saying Republicans need to identify media opposition. Experts speaking to DW warned that targeting journalists endangers press freedom and democracy. The portal appeared as Trump escalated his attacks on journalists, often insulting women reporters, calling them “ugly inside and out,” “stupid,” and “piggy.”
