North Korea Tests Hypersonic Missiles as Kim Jong-un Defends Nuclear Arsenal

North Korea has carried out test-flights of hypersonic missiles under the direct supervision of leader Kim Jong-un, highlighting the country’s focus on strengthening its nuclear deterrent. The tests come as Pyongyang ramps up weapons displays ahead of the ruling Workers’ Party congress, its first in five years.

The announcement came a day after neighboring countries reported detecting multiple ballistic missile launches, which they labeled as provocative. The timing was particularly notable, occurring just hours before South Korean President Lee Jae Myung departed for China to meet President Xi Jinping.

    Kim Emphasizes Military Preparedness

State media, through the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), said Sunday’s drill tested a hypersonic weapon system to assess combat readiness, improve missile troops’ operational skills, and evaluate the country’s overall war deterrent.

“Through today’s launching drill, we can confirm that a very important technology task for national defence has been carried out,” Kim said. He added that North Korea must continue upgrading its military, especially offensive weapon systems, to maintain strategic strength.

Possessing a functional hypersonic missile would give North Korea the capability to bypass U.S. and South Korean missile defense shields. While Pyongyang has conducted multiple hypersonic-related tests in past years, many foreign experts remain skeptical that the missiles have consistently achieved the speed and maneuverability required.

    Recent Weapons Activity Highlights Ambitions

In addition to hypersonic tests, North Korea has recently fired what it described as long-range strategic cruise missiles and new anti-air systems, while releasing photos showing progress on its first nuclear-powered submarine.

Observers say these activities are intended to showcase North Korea’s military achievements ahead of the Workers’ Party congress. Analysts are closely watching whether Kim will use the congress to signal a new approach toward the United States or indicate a willingness to revive long-stalled denuclearization talks.

    Regional Tensions and Global Implications

The missile tests followed a high-profile U.S. operation that ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and brought him to the United States to face narco-terrorism charges. North Korea condemned the operation, calling it proof of the “rogue and brutal nature of the U.S.”

Many experts suggest such developments are likely to reinforce Kim’s push to expand North Korea’s nuclear arsenal, which he views as essential for the survival of his government and the protection of the country’s sovereignty. During Sunday’s drill, Kim defended his nuclear program, saying recent geopolitical crises and complex international events show why a stronger deterrent is necessary.
