NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Ukraine’s security guarantees will rely on strengthening its military and commitments from the US and Europe. He stressed NATO’s support for Ukraine remains “unwavering” and “continues to grow.” Rutte, after meeting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv, confirmed NATO funding will ensure a steady supply of US weapons.
Rutte said US President Donald Trump confirmed America’s role in Ukraine’s guarantees after a White House meeting. “We, the Europeans, and the United States are ensuring Putin never dares to attack Ukraine again,” Rutte declared. He explained NATO discussions include possible troop deployments, intelligence support, and naval and air presence, but decisions remain pending.
Zelenskyy Demands Reliable Security Commitments
Zelenskyy insisted Ukraine requires guarantees so future generations live free of Russian attacks. He described the commitments as protections “against an aggressor.” Rutte and Zelenskyy both emphasized the importance of building guarantees strong enough to deter Moscow.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine will cooperate fully with NATO, the US, and Europe to secure lasting protection. He added that questions over foreign troop involvement remain unresolved, but planning continues.
Talks of Putin-Zelenskyy Meeting Face Kremlin Resistance
Donald Trump urged a Zelenskyy-Putin summit after meetings in Alaska and Washington, but Moscow dismissed the idea. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, “The agenda is not ready at all,” repeating the Kremlin’s refusal.
At a joint press conference with Rutte, Zelenskyy accused Moscow of blocking leadership talks to end the war. “Ukraine is not afraid of any meetings. We are ready to work productively,” Zelenskyy stated.
He urged stronger sanctions if Russia avoids diplomacy and said partners must pressure Moscow into genuine negotiations. “They must be forced into diplomacy,” Zelenskyy stressed, demanding firm measures to secure progress toward peace.
