Sir David Attenborough’s new BBC series Kingdom captures extraordinary animal behaviour in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley — including a lion rescuing a pregnant hyena from wild dogs.
Filmed over five years, the documentary follows lions, hyenas, leopards and wild dogs, revealing their fierce rivalries and surprising alliances. Executive producer Mike Gunton said: “Only nature could write this script.”
Narrated by Attenborough, the series features rare scenes such as a wild dog surviving a crocodile attack and a hyena hiding food underwater to outsmart rivals.
Researchers say the footage provides crucial data on animal survival and the threats of snares, habitat loss and climate change.
Despite the dangers, producer Simon Blakeney said Kingdom aims to inspire hope: “It’s a challenge, but it’s not hopeless.”
