Ruben Amorim accused his Manchester United side of being “too comfortable” after they threw away a lead in a chaotic 2-2 draw with Tottenham.
United looked in control for much of the match after Bryan Mbeumo’s first-half strike, but goals from Mathys Tel and Richarlison turned the game on its head before Matthijs de Ligt salvaged a point with a 96th-minute header.
Although the draw extended United’s unbeaten run to five games, Amorim was frustrated by his players’ complacency.
“We were comfortable in the game but I think we should do better,” he said. “We need to be more aggressive, feel the environment, and understand that one play can change everything. We felt too comfortable, and the game was there to take.”
There was also concern for Benjamin Sesko, who appeared to suffer a knee injury after coming on in the second half. “We think he has a problem but let’s see,” Amorim added.
Tottenham manager Thomas Frank defended his substitutions after boos greeted his decision to replace Xavi Simons with Tel, who equalised five minutes later. “Sometimes you’re lucky,” Frank said. “But every substitution is to try to win the game — and [Tel] did well.”
Despite still chasing their first home league win since August, Frank insisted Spurs are progressing:
“We turned it around and stayed in the game. So close to winning it — on another day, we do. Overall, a good performance against a strong Manchester United side.”
